BALTIMORE STREETCARS - THE POSTWAR YEARS, (by Herbert H. Harwood, Jr.) $24.95 The Johns Hopkins University Press published this revised 172-page hardbound edition in 2003. Originally published by Quadrant Press in New York City in 1984 as a 96-page soft cover book with the title Baltimore and Its Streetcars: A Pictorial Review of the Postwar Years. Very little change in text and photos; however, the presentation is more of a "coffee table" book with enlarged photos and new graphics. A glorious picture of the streetcar in Baltimore, combining the story of lines and equipment with a nostalgic view of Baltimore when so many of her people relied on the street railways.

IRON HORSES, by Edwin P. Alexander), $5.00 - American Locomotives 1829-1900 -- This 240-page hardbound book was originally published by Norton & Company. The author holds the 1941 copyright. This is a Bonanza Books printing with no date. The book is a pictorial story of the development of the American locomotive from the first engine to run on rails in 1829 down to the turn of the century. There is something about a locomotive which is universally fascinating. Here is a book that does justice to the old locomotives - a representative collection of 97 prints and lithographs with case histories of the engines they depict. The 2nd and 3rd scans below show how the left side of a double-page spread has the written material while the right side shows a typical locomotive. Book in good condition with dust jacket in poor to fair condition with visible rubs and minor tears at the spine. There is a 1.5-inch tear from the top of the front cover plus a small piece missing on the bottom visible in the scan.
LINES WEST - GREAT NORTHERN RAILWAY, (by Charles R. Wood), $24.95 - A Pictorial History of the Great Northern Railway Operations and Motive Power from 1887 to 1967. McGee, Phil Kohl, Casey Adams, Howard Durfy, and other famous railroad photographers.

RAILWAYS, (by Howard Loxton) $4.95 152-pages with many illustrations, including some in color. Published by The Hamlyn Publishing Group Limited, Copyright 1963, Revisted Edition 1970. Book and dust jacket are in good condition. The idea of the railway continues to stimulate excitement and enthusiasm among both young and old. You can read, sometimes in the words of people who were actually there, the story of the first British and American railways. You can browse through pictures of the early locomotives and compare them with the giants from the latter days of steam. You can follow with excitement the rail speed record holders and see the way in which the railway inspired painters, writers, and musicians.
A place has been found for innumerable aspects of the railway: stations, rolling stock, signals, permanent way, the great transcontinental lines, narrow gauge, undergrounds, steam, diesel, electric and gas turbine locomotives. . . with a special place for the railwaymen themselves. Here are railway history, fact, opinion, literature and romance illustrated with hundreds of photos making this a book to delight the railway enthusiast.
SIERRA RAILWAY, (by Dorothy Newell Deane), $24.95 Howell-North 182-page 6x9-inch hardbound book copyrighted 1960, good condition with tight binding. Dust jacket in fair condition (rubbing and tears). This is an intimate history of a vigorous well-known shortline. It has been continuously in operation since 1896 (1960), and now, although dieselized, still maintains some steam motive power for peak loads, railfan trips and numerous movie appearance. The book successfully recreates the atmosphere that distinguishes this line - it's a definitive history of an ambitious, far-sighted, likable railroad which traversed an area of vital historical interest.
RAILROAD STEAM PASSENGER LOCOMOTIVES, (by Brian Hollingsworth) $9.95 This 9x12-inch 208-page hardbound book was copyrighted by Salamander Books Ltd. in 1982. This edition is published by Crescent Books. A magnificently illustrated tribute to more than 150 historic international steam locomotives - many from the United States. Includes over 260 photographs, most in color, 90 superbly detailed full-color profile drawings, and two 8-page panoramic fold-outs depicting four true giants of steam in full color across the width of four pages. The book, with a tight binding and dust jacket are in good condition. The book is presented as a historical record, a magnificient tribute to a form of transport that has spanned more than 150 years, and in particular to the steam passenger express locomotive. Superbly complemented by painstakingly prepared full-color drawings and splendid photographs, the absorbing descriptions relate the development and service of these special locomotives.
TRAINS AROUND THE WORLD, (by Octopus Books Limited) $4.95 Octopus Books published this 162-page, 8 1/2 x 11-inch hardbound book with a copyright date of 1972. The book has been compiled by authors who are well-known throughout the world as authorities and enthusiasts of this subject. Electric trains, diesel trains, freight trains, passenger trains, robber barons, railway pioneer - the whole exciting story is unfolded in text and pictures. NOTE: There is quite a bit of US coverage.
YANKEES UNDER STEAM - STORIES OF STEAM POWER AND THE WORLD IT MADE, (Compiled by the editors of Yankee Magazine) $9.95 This 9x12-inch 254-page hardbound book was copyrighted by Yankee Inc. in 1970. Yankees Under Steam is the story of the steam engine and the world it served and changed. Here are 41 true articles from Yankee Magazine dealing with steam and illustrated with more than 200 photographs, engravings, and diagrams. Automobiles, locomotives, paddle wheelers, fire engines, even bicycles and submarines, were powered by staem engines. Those big, hulking, cumbersome steam engines with exposed valves, boilers, and fireboxes lent a special grace to anything they powered. The book is in good condition with a tight binding. The dust jacket is in fair condition. While intact, it has tears.

DELAWARE LACKAWANNA & WESTERN MULTIPLE-UNIT ELECTRIC TRAIN, A 45 plus minute recording made on the electrified branch line from Gladstone to Summit, New Jersey on December 29, 1983. These cars, dating from the original electrification in 1931, were replaced within the next year. On board Motor Car No. 3550, you will hear the conductor reversing the rattan seats before starting the trip along with the air compressors. There is plenty of air horn due to the many grade crossings on the branch and of course the familiar traction "hum." - $7.50 postpaid first class mail.

MARYLAND & PENNSYLVANIA HEAVY CONSOLIDATION NO. 42's WHISTLE, For this recording, the homemade Ma & Pa whistle is installed on New Jersey's Pine Creek Railroad's three-foot gauge 2-6-2 No. 26. Approximately thirty minutes of sounds recorded both trackside and on-board. And yes, plenty of familiar Ma & Pa wheel flange squeal. The date is September 17, 1979. - $7.50 postpaid first class mail.

GARDEN RAILWAYS - A Video Album, (VHS Video Tape) $4.95 Garden Railroading is the fastest growing facet of the model train hobby today (1991). This videotape will show you trains in action on sixteen fine garden railroads from around the USA. You'll learn about the roots of the hobby and see how others across the country pursue it. Find out how various styles of bridges, trestles, and tunnels can be used: see how these lines have been realistically integrated into beautiful scale gardens. Through the magic of video, you'll ride on the trains through their various conutrysides. Experience garden railroading at its best! This is a professionally produced and edited program. Narrated by Marc Horovitz, Editor of Garden Railways magazine. Copyright 1991 by Windowmusic. Video comes in a hard box and has been viewed once.
